Lenape Trail Run
This event follows an approximately 34 miles section of the Lenape Trail, beginning with a meetup at the Locust Grove trailhead in South Mountain Reservation and using a train ride to reach the eastern portion of the route in Newark. Runners cover the trail back to their cars along a corridor that includes urban sidewalks, surfaced trail segments, dirt paths and aqueducts.
The run is self supported. Participants will pass stores and there will be some aid dropped along the route, but each runner is expected to carry the gear and nutrition needed to complete the full distance.
The Lenape Trail was established in 1982 and is one of New Jersey's longest trails. For almost its entire length the route is marked by yellow blazes on trees and poles. The official trail corridor moves from Newark's Ironbound district and Downtown Newark through Branch Brook Park, then through Belleville, Nutley and Bloomfield. It continues past Brookdale Park, Applegate Farm, the Mills Reservation and along former railroad alignments into Verona and Verona Park, then to Eagle Rock Reservation where there are skyline views. The trail proceeds under I-280 and across the Watchung ridges toward South Mountain Reservation, where this run rejoins the southern section of the Lenape Trail.
