Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a mountain running event based at Friend Park Campground in Medicine Bow National Forest near Douglas, Wyoming on July 11, 2026. The event offers three formats: a 24-hour mountain endurance challenge in which participants complete as many full summit laps as possible, a 12-hour challenge with a rolling start that allows running into night, and a single summit challenge consisting of one ascent and descent.
The route climbs through dense pine, rocky mule deer paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops, topping out near 10,000 feet with wide views over the Laramie Range. The course is remote, technical, and steep in sections. A typical lap is about 9 miles with nearly 3,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. Runners should prepare for high altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather.
Basecamp at Friend Park Campground is the event hub and the only aid station on course. It provides water, electrolytes, soda, coffee, fresh fruit, snacks, and made-to-order hot food such as burgers, pancakes, and grilled quesadillas. The basecamp also offers drop-bag space, crew access, and fire pits when allowed. On-site medical coverage is provided by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department.
Recommended gear includes a hydration vest with 1.5 to 2 liters capacity, warm layers, a windproof or waterproof jacket, a reliable headlamp and spare batteries, trail shoes with rock traction, and trekking poles. Runners are advised to plan nutrition at roughly 200 to 300 calories per hour, use the aid station as supplemental fuel, and practice their gear and fueling before the event.
