Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a mountain endurance event based at Friend Park Campground in Medicine Bow National Forest near Douglas, Wyoming. It is offered in multiple formats that vary by time and distance.
- 24 Hour Mountain Endurance Challenge - complete as many full summit laps as possible
- 12 Hour Challenge - rolling start window for shorter time on course
- Single Summit Challenge - one ascent and one descent of Laramie Peak
The route climbs from Friend Park through dense pine, rocky mule deer paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops, topping out near 10,000 feet. A lap is about 9 miles with nearly 3,000 feet of vertical gain and loss. The course is remote, steep, and technical; runners should plan for high altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather.
Basecamp at Friend Park Campground serves as the only aid station on course. It provides water, electrolytes, soda, coffee, fresh fruit, sweets, salty snacks, and made-to-order hot food such as burgers, pancakes, and grilled quesadillas. Basecamp also offers drop-bag space, crew access, and overnight fire pits when allowed.
On-site medical coverage is provided by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department. The event partners with a foundation that uses trail running and fast packing as a form of recreational therapy to support veterans. Recommended gear and nutrition guidance include adequate hydration capacity, warm layers, a reliable headlamp, and planning for 200 to 300 calories per hour.
