Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a mountain running event based at Friend Park Campground in the Medicine Bow National Forest near Douglas, WY. The event offers three formats: a 24-hour mountain endurance event where participants complete as many full summit laps as possible, a 12-hour challenge with a rolling start window, and a single-summit option that covers one ascent and descent.
The route climbs from Friend Park through dense pine, rocky mule deer paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops, topping out near 10,000 feet. A lap is about 9 miles with nearly 3,000 feet of vertical gain and loss. The course is described as rugged, technical, steep, and remote; runners should be prepared for high altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather.
Basecamp Aid Station at Friend Park Campground serves as the event hub and is the only aid station on course. It provides water, electrolytes, soda, coffee, fresh fruit, snacks, typical ultra fare, and made-to-order hot food such as burgers, pancakes, and grilled quesadillas. Basecamp also offers fire pits when permitted, drop-bag space, and crew access.
On-site medical coverage is provided by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department. Recommended equipment includes a hydration pack, warm layers, a reliable headlamp with spare batteries, trail shoes with rock traction, trekking poles, and basic emergency and blister care. Nutrition planning guidance suggests 200 to 300 calories per hour and practicing gear and food before the event.
The event partners with the Warrior Trail Foundation to support veteran-focused trail running programs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
