Juneau Ridge Race : Juneau, Alaska
The Juneau Ridge Race starts and finishes at Cope Park in downtown Juneau and covers approximately 15 miles with about 5000 feet of total elevation gain. The route passes briefly through town, follows Basin Road and Perserverance Trail, ascends to the summit of Mt. Juneau at about mile 4.9 with roughly 3500 feet of vertical gain, traverses the Juneau Ridge for about three miles, then descends into Granite Basin and returns along Perserverance Trail and The Flume to Cope Park.
Runners should expect varied terrain including steep ascent, ridge traverse, technical flat and downhill sections, and faster trail segments in the final four miles. There are three checkpoints located along the course, but these are not full aid stations; they will carry only limited food and water when local groundwater allows. Participants are expected to carry the supplies they anticipate needing, or appropriate filtration for untreated water.
Racers must carry a basic kit that includes a wind or water resistant jacket, a long sleeve shirt, an emergency space blanket or bivy, a beanie or buff that covers the ears, gloves, water, and food. In inclement weather additional gear requirements may be communicated in the week before the event or the race may be postponed.
Registration closes on Sun, Jun 21. Participation is limited to those aged 18 and over; athletes aged 16 or 17 may petition for entry and no participants under 16 are permitted. The event is USATF sanctioned and is part of the Alaska Mountain Running Grand Prix series. Post race activities in Cope Park include food from Forno Rosso and an awards presentation.
