It takes place annually on the first Saturday in October; the 2025 event is scheduled for Saturday 4th October 2025. The race is described as the longest-running mountain relay in the country.

The route is run over four legs, each run in pairs, so teams consist of 8 runners. Organizers state the event is not intended for novice runners or those without mountain navigation experience.
