Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay

The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay is a long-standing fell running relay race held in the heart of the Lake District Fells. Taking place in October, the event starts and finishes at the King George Playing Field in Patterdale. It is recognized as the longest-running mountain relay in the country and typically hosts approximately 70 teams.

The race consists of four legs completed in pairs, requiring a total of eight runners per team. The route covers difficult mountain terrain featuring significant climbs and steep descents. Participants must navigate the course without the use of GPS, relying instead on map reading skills and experience with fell running conditions. The event is not intended for novice runners.

Teams can compete in four specific categories:

  • Women's Team: Consists of eight women.
  • Mixed Open Team: Includes four men and four women.
  • Mixed Vets Team: Comprises four men and four women, all aged 40 or over on race day.
  • Open Team: Open to all other eligible combinations.

The minimum age for participation is 18 years old. However, one runner aged 16 or 17 may compete on the first leg if paired with a runner over 18 and provided with parental consent. Registration is managed through a pre-selection process, with preference often given to clubs with a history of supporting the event and proven fell experience.
