Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay
The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay is a fell running competition held in the heart of the Lake District Fells. Based at the King George Playing Field in Patterdale, this event is the longest-running mountain relay in the country. The race is held annually on the first Saturday in October and follows a route across mountain terrain featuring steep climbs and descents.
The race consists of four legs, each completed by a pair of runners, totaling eight participants per team. Participants must have the ability and experience to navigate difficult terrain, as GPS technology is not permitted during the race. All runners must be able to read a map and navigate independently, particularly in the event of poor weather conditions.
The competition is limited to approximately 70 teams divided into various categories:
- Women's Team: 8 female runners.
- Mixed Open Team: 4 male and 4 female runners.
- Mixed Vets Team: 4 men and 4 women, all 40 years or older.
- Open Team: Any combination of 8 runners.
The minimum age for participation is 18 years, with an exception for Leg 1, where a 16 or 17 year old may run if paired with an adult and provided with parental consent. Registration for the event follows a pre-selection process, with priority often given to clubs with a history of supporting the event or those with proven fell running experience.
