Old Crown Round
The Old Crown Round is a category AL fell race of approximately 36 km with about 2200 m of ascent. The route starts and finishes in the village of Hesket Newmarket and completes a loop of the higher summits of the Northern Fells in the Lake District. The course passes road, track, paths, open fields and open fell in some remote areas, so navigational skills are essential.
Checkpoints are located on the summits of Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw, Knott and High Pike. There is a checkpoint cutoff on Carrock Fell; runners who miss it are offered two alternatives. One option follows river crossings and the Cumbrian Way to Skiddaw House, rejoining the route via Great Calva and Knott and avoiding the summits of Blencathra and Skiddaw; this alternative is about 27 km with 1200 m of ascent and records a time but is not eligible for prizes. The other option is to return to the start by retracing the route.
The event is for adults only with an age limit of over 18. Entries are managed in advance and there are no entries on the day. The organiser operates a no refunds policy for the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
