Highlands Sky 40M Trail Run

The Highlands Sky 40M Trail Run is an ultra-marathon event held in West Virginia. The course primarily traverses the Monongahela National Forest, passing through the Roaring Plains and Dolly Sods Wilderness Areas. It also covers sections of the Timberline Ski Resort and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, concluding at Canaan Valley State Park near Davis.

The route is situated on the highest plateau in the eastern United States. Participants encounter a variety of technical terrain and ecosystems characteristic of more northern latitudes. The landscape features a mix of northern hardwoods, stunted red spruce, and heath barrens. The ground conditions consist of woodland paths, ancient sphagnum bogs, and rocky plains filled with boulders.

Dolly Sods is a prominent feature of the course, known for its "sods" or mountaintop meadows, stunted trees, and rocky terrain. The run takes place annually on the Saturday before Father's Day. Experience a downhill 3 km run through the scenic quartzite ridges of Seneca Rocks. This free gravel road event crosses the Potomac River as part of the Fourest Festival celebrations.

Trail race on the Promised Land Trail behind Canaan Valley Resort offering a one-loop 5.9 mile and a two-loop 11.8 mile option. The field is limited to 200 participants and entrants receive a T-shirt and finisher medal.
