Highlands Sky 40M Trail Run

The Highlands Sky 40M is a 40 mile trail run held in mid June, typically on the Saturday before Father’s Day. The event is centered at Canaan Valley Resort State Park in Davis, West Virginia, and the course travels primarily through the Monongahela National Forest with sections on Timberline Ski Resort and through the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, finishing at Canaan Valley State Park.

The race route passes through the Roaring Plains and Dolly Sods Wilderness Areas. Dolly Sods is described as containing the highest plateau in the eastern United States and a landscape of rocky ground, stunted trees, and mountaintop meadows known as the sods. The course includes varied trail surfaces and environments, including northern hardwoods, stunted red spruce, heath barrens, woodland paths, ancient sphagnum bogs, and rocky and boulder filled plains. These features create a mix of open plateau and forested trail sections.

The event is organized by the West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners and is noted as the twenty second running of Highlands Sky 40M. The club is a partner with the Monongahela National Forest. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
