14th Annual Herron Park Races
The Herron Half, 10k, and 5k are trail running events held within the Herron Park trail system in Kalispell, Montana. These races serve as the largest annual fundraising effort for the Foys to Blacktail Trails (FTBT) system, with proceeds supporting the construction and maintenance of 34 miles of trails. The event is part of the Flathead Race Series, which includes several other regional trail competitions.
The event features diverse distances to accommodate different preferences:
- Half Marathon
- 10k
- 5k
- Kids' Race (for those under age 13)
The Half Marathon course includes three aid stations, while the 10k features one station. The 5k course does not have aid stations. This is a cupless event; participants must carry their own bottles to use the water or electrolyte drinks provided. The trail environment is home to various wildlife, including bears and mountain lions. Organizers encourage the use of bear spray and discourage the use of headphones to ensure runners can hear animals or other participants.
Environmental conditions in Montana can vary, and participants are advised to prepare for a range of weather. The event includes a post-race gathering with a pancake bar and an awards ceremony. Bib pickup is available the day before the race in downtown Kalispell or at the park on race morning. While spectator dogs are permitted on leashes in accordance with county rules, dogs are not allowed to participate in the races. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
