Hunting Hollow 5K/10K Fun Run and Walk
The event is an annual 5K and 10K fun run and walk held each year on the second Saturday in June at Hunting Hollow in Henry W. Coe State Park. The course is an in and out route on a relatively flat dirt road that follows the valley and occasionally crosses a potentially wet creek. The 5K turnaround is about halfway up the valley while the 10K continues to the hollow's end before returning. Both distances start and finish at the Hunting Hollow parking lot.
Late spring flowers such as California roses, lupines, and clarkias can be present along the course. Large oak, sycamore, and bay trees are scattered on the valley floor. Wildlife observations reported along the route include deer, coyotes, bobcats, and soaring birds such as golden eagles, red tailed hawks, and turkey vultures.
Proceeds from the event support projects at the park through the Pine Ridge Association. Participants are grouped by age divisions from under 14 through 70 plus, with medals for the first three finishers in each division and trophies for overall top finishers. The Hunting Hollow entrance and parking area is located on the south west edge of the park on Gilroy Hot Springs Road northeast of Gilroy, is open 24 hours, has no drinking water, and does not permit dogs beyond the entrance.
