Hunting Hollow 5K/10K Fun Run and Walk
This annual event takes place each year on the second Saturday in June at Hunting Hollow in Henry W. Coe State Park. It offers two distances: 5 km and 10 km.
The course follows a relatively flat dirt road along the valley and is an out and back layout. Runners and walkers may cross a potentially wet creek along the route. The 5 km course turns around about halfway up the valley; the 10 km continues to the hollow's end before returning. The route passes through areas with late spring wildflowers such as California roses, lupines, and clarkias, and through scattered oak, sycamore, and bay trees. Wildlife sightings reported along the course include deer, coyotes, bobcats, and soaring raptors like golden eagles, red tailed hawks, or turkey vultures.
Proceeds from the event are used by the Pine Ridge Association to fund projects benefiting Coe Park. Participants compete in age divisions that include Under 14 through 70 plus, with medals for the first three finishers in each division and trophies for overall top finishers.
The Hunting Hollow entrance and parking lot are located on Gilroy Hot Springs Road on the south west edge of the park. The gate and parking area are open year round. There is no drinking water available at the entrance and dogs are not allowed beyond the parking area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
