Heavens Gate Marathon and Half Marathon

Event overview

The Heavens Gate Marathon and Half Marathon is scheduled for May 1-2, 2026 in Riggins, ID, in the Seven Devils area. The event lists three race options: an ultra around 53K, a 26K loop, and a Friday afternoon Vertical race to Challenger Peak. Registration opens January 2, 2026.

Race courses

• 53K (about 33 miles): an extended route incorporating Cannonball Mountain and additional terrain, with approximately 13,000 feet of total climbing and major climbs of about 5,000, 3,500, and 2,000 feet.
• 26K (about 16.5 miles): a classic loop that goes up Blue Gulch, over Cannonball Mountain, down to McRea Cabin and back through the canyon, with about 6,000 feet of climbing.
• 2-3K Vertical Race: an uphill-only route of roughly 1-2 miles that climbs about 2,500 feet to the summit of Challenger Peak, starting at the Hatchery and ending at the peak.

Support and notes

The 53K requires a mandatory kit of gear and nutrition and will include two manned aid stations plus additional water stations. The 26K includes one manned aid station and a few water stations. The Vertical race is free for entrants of the 53K and 26K; a small fee may apply to other participants pending US Forest Service permit approvals.
