Mountain Running in the San Bernardino National Forest
The Green Valley Lake running event takes place in the San Bernardino Mountains, situated between Running Springs and Big Bear. The course offers a mountain environment within the San Bernardino National Forest, featuring a mix of paved surfaces, dirt roads, and trails. Participants navigate through pine forests and past rocky vistas at high elevation.
The available race distances include:
- 5k
- 10k
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
The race begins with a scenic out-and-back segment along the lake before climbing gradually up Green Valley Lake Road. Runners transition onto forest service roads, with the 5k participants reaching a 400-foot elevation gain at their turnaround point. The 10k and Half Marathon routes continue along rolling terrain on Forest Service Road 2N13. Aid stations providing water are positioned approximately every 1.5 miles along the course.
All participants receive a custom event t-shirt and a finisher medal. The races are chip-timed, and awards are presented to the top three overall finishers in each distance. Additionally, age group medals are awarded three deep in five-year increments, ranging from age 10 and under up to 80 and over. Post-race activities, including live music and an awards ceremony, take place at the Downtown Community Garden on Main Street. Proceeds from the event support environmental stewardship and local community initiatives. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
