Gormire Gamble Fell Race
The Gormire Gamble is a fell race held in the North York Moors and organised by Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers. It starts and finishes at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre in the North York Moors National Park (YO7 2EH) and forms part of the Esk Valley Fell Club winter fell race series.
The course covers 9 km with 250 m of climb. It carries FRA classifications PM (partially marked), NS (navigational skills required), and LK (local knowledge an advantage). GPS navigation is not permitted. The route descends from Sutton Bank Visitor Centre down to Gormire Lake and includes a noted viewpoint described as "the finest view in England."
The race is open to adult runners and typically attracts a broad field of fell running clubs from across Yorkshire and beyond. Fields of around 160 runners are common at the start line. Prizes are awarded across age categories including open, senior (U23 included), V40, and five-year bands beyond that, and there are team prizes.
Terrain mixes road and trail and includes tree branches, roots, and mud. Conditions can be wet, windy, and slippery later in the season. Runners are required to carry full FRA mandatory kit, including waterproof whole-body cover, hat, gloves, map, compass, and a whistle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
