David Staff Memorial Fell Race
This is a Category AS fell race on the West Pennine Moors above Darwen, Lancashire. The course is 6 km with 305 m of climb and is organised from The Kiosk in Sunnyhurst Woods, Darwen (BB3 0LA). The event has a minimum age of 14 years.
The route starts on the main path opposite The Kiosk, turns left at the bandstand, leaves the wood via the Lychgate carpark next to The Sunnyhurst pub, then continues right to Waterman's Cottage and left up the concrete path. Runners follow the familiar line up to Darwen Tower and around the moors. The descent returns the same way into the woods via the pub and the finish is at the bandstand.
Entries open on 23 March 2026 and close on 14 November 2026. Entry fees listed are £7.50 for FRA members and £8.50 for non members; the event record shows a modest number of entries to date. The race is organised by the local running club and is run in memory of a former junior member. Funds raised support the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, which provides heart screening for young people; fundraising linked to this event and associated activity has helped identify heart defects and contributed to charitable screening work.
