Crater Trail Run
The Crater Trail Run is held on the single-track trails of Van Peenen Memorial Park in Decorah, Iowa, located in the region described as Northeast Iowa’s bluff country. The park is part of a 17-mile plus system of single-track mountain bike trails. Trails used for the races are groomed and marked.
Distances offered include:
- 1 Mile
- 5K : 3.2 miles, 613 feet climbing
- 10K : 6.3 miles, 1,383 feet of climbing
- 25K : 15.5 miles, 2,750 feet of climbing
- 50K : 31.1 miles, 5,500+ feet of climbing
Aid and logistics are provided as follows. Runners should plan to carry most of their own fuel; aid stations will offer water, hydration drink, and food as supplies last. 50K runners have multiple stations and drop bag locations including a station at Death Valley that 50K runners pass four times and drop bag access at Palisades Park. 25K runners pass Death Valley twice and have a drop bag location at Palisades Park. 5K and 10K runners pass the Death Valley station twice.
Packet pickup is scheduled the day before the event at Decorah Hatchery. Participants may change distances up until packet pickup. Start and finish are at the Van Peenen Park trailhead on Quarry Hill Road. Headphones are discouraged for safety. The event proceeds are split between the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, Decorah Human Powered Trails, and Decorah Park & Rec. The event is planned to proceed in ordinary weather and may be postponed or cancelled only in extreme conditions; no refund guarantee is provided.
