Crater Trail Run takes place on the single track trails of Van Peenen Memorial Park in Decorah, Iowa, within a larger 17 mile plus mountain bike trail system. The course uses groomed, marked off-road trails through the bluff country near Quarry Hill Road.
Distances offered:
- 1 Mile
- 5 K 3.2 miles, 613 feet climbing
- 10 K 6.3 miles, 1,383 feet climbing
- 25 K 15.5 miles, 2,750 feet climbing
- 50 K 31.1 miles, 5,500+ feet climbing
Aid stations will supply water, hydration drink, and food as supplies last; runners should plan to carry and manage their own fuel. Specific aid and drop bag locations are provided for each distance, including stations at the Van Peenen entrance, Palisades Park entrance, and a location called Death Valley where runners pass multiple times depending on distance.
Packet pickup is scheduled for Friday, June 5, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Decorah Hatchery, 406 W. Water Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Race turns are clearly marked on course. Headphones are not encouraged for safety due to narrow single track sections and potential passing.
Proceeds are shared between the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, Decorah Human Powered Trails, and Decorah Park & Rec. The event is planned to proceed in a range of weather conditions; refunds are not guaranteed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
