Crater Trail Run is a trail running event held at Van Peenen Memorial Park in Decorah, Iowa. The course uses off-road single track trails that are part of a 17-mile plus system of mountain bike trails. Trails are groomed and marked for the races. The event supports local causes; proceeds are split between the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, the Decorah Human Powered Trails and Decorah Park and Rec.
The event offers multiple distances with significant climbing. Climbs are listed as approximate.
- 50K 31.1 miles, 5500+ feet of climbing.
- 25K 15.5 miles, 2750 feet of climbing.
- 10K 6.3 miles, 1383 feet of climbing.
- 5K 3.2 miles, 613 feet of climbing.
- 1 Mile kids mile.
Aid stations provide water, hydration drink and food as supplies last. Named aid locations include the Van Peenen entrance, the Palisades Park entrance and a location called Death Valley. Drop bag locations are available at the start/Van Peenen entrance and at the Palisades Park entrance for certain distances. Death Valley is passed multiple times by longer-distance runners.
Start and finish are at the trail head on Quarry Hill Road. All course turns are marked. Packet pickup and check in occur at the Decorah Hatchery in Decorah; organizers recommend early pickup for longer-distance runners. Headphones are not encouraged for safety.
