Crater Trail Run 2026
Crater Trail Run is staged in Decorah, Iowa, using the off road single track trails of Van Peenen Memorial Park. The course runs on groomed and marked trails that are part of a 17 mile plus system of mountain bike and single track routes around the park.
Distances and climbing figures are provided for each event:
- 50K 31.1 miles, 5500+ feet of climbing.
- 25K 15.5 miles, 2750 feet of climbing.
- 10K 6.3 miles, 1383 feet of climbing.
- 5K 3.2 miles, 613 feet of climbing.
- 1 Mile kids race.
Aid stations supply water, hydration drink and food as supplies last. There are designated aid or drop bag locations at the trailhead, the Van Peenen entrance, the Palisades Park entrance, and a location called Death Valley that longer distance runners pass multiple times.
Packet pickup is scheduled on the Friday before the event at Decorah Hatchery, 406 W. Water Street, Decorah. Overall male and female winners for each event receive priority on prize selection and a general entry raffle is held onsite.
The event is a grassroots fundraiser. Proceeds are split among the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, the Decorah Human Powered Trails, and Decorah Park and Recreation.
