Crater Crawl
Crater Crawl is an outdoor running and hiking event scheduled for September 12, 2026. The main course is a 10K that follows a jeep road to the top of a broad shield volcano and then routes around the adjacent Crater Rings. The course includes sustained uphill and downhill sections and is exposed to desert conditions. Three hydration stations are located along the 10K course at 2.1 miles, 3.4 miles, and 5.1 miles. Parking is by parallel parking alongside Main Cinder Butte Road.
The Crater Rings are adjacent, symmetrical volcanic pit craters recognized as a National Natural Landmark. They lie about eight miles northwest of Mountain Home, Idaho, on the top of a shield volcano. The eastern crater is about 3,000 feet across and 350 feet deep; the western crater is about 2,500 feet across and 300 feet deep. The volcano is estimated to be less than two million years old.
There is a shorter route that is a 2.9 mile out and back to the East Crater viewpoint for those who prefer a shorter visit to the crater rim. The event supports low impact non motorized outdoor recreation and raises funds for Idaho Outdoor Association projects and Idaho Trails Association projects. Awards are given to the overall top five male and female finishers and to youth finishers age 12 and under. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
