Course and race logistics

The course begins with almost 2 miles on gravel road, then a climb on Pinhoti 2 for about 4 miles to a gravel forest service road and the first aid station. After less than a mile of gravel the route climbs on Pinhoti 1 for almost 4 miles to the Bear Creek section. A 0.2 mile out-and-back reaches an aid stop, then the route climbs to the top of Bear Creek where an aid station sits before the distances split.

For the 30K the route descends gravel back to Mulberry Gap, passing Bear Creek overlook and Barnes Creek Falls, with a stated total of approximately 19 miles and 2,900 ft of climbing. For the 50K the route descends gravel 0.5 miles, returns to Bear Creek trail for a loop, then revisits the trail head aid station and climbs back via Pinhoti 1 and Pinhoti 2, with a stated total of about 30 miles and 4,400 ft of climbing.

Aid stations provide water, electrolytes and a range of food (chips, candies, pb&j, grilled cheese/quesadillas at the top of Bear Creek, avocado tortillas, soda and more). The event uses hard cutoffs at each aid station, with overall cutoffs of 7 hours for the 30K and 10 hours for the 50K (equivalent to about a 20 minute per mile overall pace). Refund and deferral policies are listed: refunds up to one month before the event, a two-year pregnancy deferral option, half credit after 30 days, and no bib transfers if a waiting list exists. Volunteers receive future race entry and swag. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
