Chester Ultra 100 : event overview

Chester Ultra 100 is a trail ultramarathon of 102 miles with 1590 m of total ascent. The event is based at Ellesmere Port Sports Village (start and finish) and has 400 places. The overall cut-off for the race is 32 hours. The 2026 event awards ITRA points and UTMB mountain performance index points and is held under a UKA permit via the Trail Running Association. Live GPS tracking is provided by GB Race Tracker and the tracker device is mandatory for all entrants.

Qualifying criteria require entrants to be at least 20 years old, in good health, and to have completed (or be entered in) a prior ultramarathon of at least 50 miles before the race day. Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and includes a waterproof coat with sealed seams, a long-sleeved base layer in a dry bag, a water bottle or bladder (min 1 litre), a fully charged mobile phone, a survival/thermal bag or bivi, a headtorch (min 75 lumens), a whistle, a backup light source (min 25 lumens) and the event GPS tracker. Random kit checks will take place.

Course, checkpoints and support

The route links a range of local trails and canals, including the Sandstone Trail, the Marches Way beside the River Dee, Helsby Hill, Frodsham, Beeston Castle, Delamere Forest, the Bridgewater Canal, the Shropshire Canal, the Trans-Pennine Trail and the North Cheshire Way. There are 12 checkpoints along the course. Checkpoint provisions include drinks (water, cola, tailwind, juice), snacks, fruit, sandwiches and hot food; pasta and soup are provided at specified village hall checkpoints. A medic is available.

A single dropbag is permitted at the Frodsham location (used for both CP6 and CP11). One pacer is allowed from the halfway point at Frodsham Parish Hall; the pacer must be on foot, self-sufficient and carry the mandatory kit. Due to parking limits, support crew access is restricted at some checkpoints and dogs (except service dogs) are not permitted at checkpoints or at the start/finish venue. GPS trackers remain the property of the race organiser and must be returned after the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
