Event overview

Carnethy Hill Running Club organises the Carnethy Skyloop, a Category A long hill race in the Pentland Hills south of Edinburgh. The course distance is 30 km with approximately +1700 m total climb (about 18.5 miles and 6000 ft). Registration, start and finish are at Lothianburn Clubhouse, Midlothian, Grid Reference NT 24874 67276. Entries are handled online through SiEntries; the entry fee is £10. Entries open 21 August 2025 and close 5 October 2025. The organiser has reported entries so far.

Course, entry and rules

The route is similar to the traditional Pentland Skyline but is not identical. It includes steep ascents and descents, loose and rough ground, and areas of open moorland. Much of the course is unmarked and competitors must be able to navigate in poor visibility using map and compass; following GPS tracks on a watch is not allowed. Minimum required kit includes a waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof over-trousers, hat and gloves, map and compass, whistle and suitable fell-running shoes. Competitors must be aged 18 or over and have hill-racing experience. There is a checkpoint cutoff on the route where the marshals’ decision is final, and a specified retirement procedure that requires reporting to a marshal and handing in the race number. Folding or telescoping poles are permitted but must be kept folded until past Caerketton Hill. Parking restrictions apply on the ski access road and at the ski centre. Part of the entry income will be donated to local partnerships. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
