Bandera, United States • 23-25 Oct 2026
Overview
The Cactus Rose Endurance Trail Race takes place at the Hill Country State Natural Area near Bandera, Texas. It is designed as a rugged and technical trail run on purpose.
Distances
The event offers several race distances:
- 5 miles
- 25 miles
- 50 miles
- 100 miles
- 5 mile ruck
- 25 mile ruck
- 1 mile youth run
Course Details
The race uses a main 25-mile loop with a shortcut for a 5-mile loop. Every distance runs clockwise for its first lap. Races with multiple laps alternate directions, with laps 1 and 3 run clockwise and laps 2 and 4 run counter-clockwise.
The course is known for rocks and sotol cactus. It features approximately 2,500 feet of elevation change per 25-mile lap and has very little flat ground. There is no extensive flat section, with runners mostly climbing or descending on rocky terrain.
The course is clearly marked with orange caution tape, yellow arrows, and confidence markers, all featuring high-grade reflectors for night running. The race is cupless, so participants must bring their own cup or water bottle. Littering can result in disqualification.
Race Features
The event operates with an old-school, self-support style. Runners are expected to be self-sufficient, placing their own drop bags and ice chests at the five aid stations. The aid stations provide ice and water, but food and special treats are considered a bonus, not guaranteed.
For the ruck divisions, participants must carry a weighted pack. Required weights are 20 lbs for participants under 150 lbs and 30 lbs for those over 150 lbs. The weight cannot be consumable or wearable and must be carried on the back.
Pacers are allowed for 100-mile runners after their second lap, for 50-mile runners after dark, and for all runners aged 60 and older for the entire race.
Location & Logistics
The race hub is at the Hill Country State Natural Area's Group Lodge. Packet pickup occurs on site as well as at iRun Texas in San Antonio in the days before the race. Primitive tent and RV camping is available on site for a fee, which is covered by race registration for participants. Spectators, crew, and family must pay an entrance fee.
