Gravel Cycling in the Grandfather Ranger District

The Bootlegger 100 is a gravel cycling event that takes place in North Carolina. The routes start and finish in downtown Lenoir and lead participants through the rugged terrain of the Wilson Creek Gorge and the Grandfather Ranger District, also known as the "other Pisgah." The course travels through rural countryside before entering forested areas featuring significant elevation changes.

Participants can choose between two distinct route distances:

  • 85 miles: This long course includes approximately 7,250 feet of climbing and traverses the fabled Maple Sally Road.
  • 58 miles: This route features approximately 4,500 feet of total elevation gain.

The event utilizes orange course marking tape and large arrow signs to guide cyclists at every turn. Well-stocked rest areas provide water and various food items along the way, though participants are responsible for carrying their own gear as there is no drop bag service.

Rules for the event require all participants to wear approved cycling helmets and use functioning front and rear lights at all times. Electric-assist bikes are prohibited, and riders must follow local traffic laws. After crossing the finish line, participants are provided with post-race meals and refreshments. Overnight car, van, and RV camping is permitted in designated downtown parking lots, though no hookups are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
