Blacks Grove Backyard Ultra
Wadena, United States • 22 May 2026
Event overview
Blacks Grove Backyard Ultra is held at Blacks Grove Park in Wadena, Minnesota. The event offers two formats: a Backyard Ultra (Last Runner Standing) using a 4.167-mile loop, and a One-Loop Fun Run consisting of a single 4.167-mile lap. The course runs on technical Minnesota woods singletrack with roots, rocks, and rolling hills. Designated camping is available in primitive park areas without electrical outlets.
Format, rules, and logistics
The Backyard Ultra uses a repeating 4.167-mile loop that must be completed within each hourly interval; the last runner to complete a solo loop remains in the competition. The event applies a set of signature rules called the Blacks Grove Grind, including periodic loop-direction reversals, a designated quiet period overnight, a one-comfort-item policy chosen at check-in, and a gong elimination system for runners who miss starts or fail to return on time. Participant caps are set at 40 for the Last Man Standing division and 80 for the One-Loop Fun Run; a waitlist is available if divisions fill.
Mandatory gear includes a phone, headlamp after dark, reflective/visibility gear, hydration, weather-appropriate layers, and personal nutrition. Crew support is allowed only in the start/finish yard; on-course assistance, pacers, and trekking poles are not permitted. The race director may modify or cancel the event for safety. Awards include a personalized belt buckle and cash prize for the Last Man Standing winner, personalized DNF chips for participants, and swag bags for all runners.
