Bisbee 1000 The Great Stair Climb
Bisbee 1000 The Great Stair Climb is an outdoor stair climb held in Old Bisbee, Arizona. The course is approximately 4.5 mile long and links nine staircases that total more than 1000 steps, with an overall elevation gain and loss of about 1175 ft. The route follows winding roads and stairways that pass through historic town areas and scenic residential gardens often described as Europeanesque.
The event is organized as a chip timed race with staggered wave starts. Registration is available online only. The event is held rain or shine. Participants must pick up their own bib in person and must wear the bib pinned to the front; bibs are not transferable and awards will not be mailed. Organizers list several event rules including no dogs or pets except service dogs which must be placed at the very back of the start, no smoking or vaping, no strollers, and no participant substitutions or refunds. On stairways participants are asked to keep right and pass on the left.
The Bisbee 1000 has run since 1990 and was later limited in size to manage participation. The field includes a wide age range of participants and a variety of approaches from competitive runners to walkers; costuming and themed participation are also common. A fitness court is installed at the finish area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
