Beacon Hill Backyard ∞
Beacon Hill Backyard is a backyard ultra held at Beacon Hill Country Park. Runners repeat the same 6.71 km loop every hour until only one runner completes a lap that no one else matches. Each loop includes about 180 m of climbing and passes over gravel, forest paths and volcanic outcrop, with sections of uneven, technical ground.
The format requires strict corral discipline. Warning sirens sound at five, three and one minute before each hourly start; runners must be in the start corral when the final siren sounds. Failing to return to the corral or to complete a lap within the hour results in elimination. If one runner completes a lap that no other runner completes, that runner is the winner; if no sole decisive lap occurs, no winner is declared.
Two formats run from the same start line: the Full Beacon Hill Backyard with no time limit and a 12-Hour Taster that concludes at the 12-hour mark. Entries are capped at 250 across both formats. To enter, runners must be at least 20 years old and in good health; previous ultra experience is not required.
Between loops participants have access to marquee bunkhouses and a labelled cubby for a provided 60L duffel bag, outdoor paddock and seating when weather allows, and toilets at base and on course. No pacers or outside aid are permitted on the loop; support is available only at the bunkhouse and start/finish area. A medal is awarded to runners who reach 100 miles (24 laps) and a DNF patch is available for others. The event is organised by Beacon Race Events and is affiliated with national trail and athletics bodies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
