Backyard Ultra - Las Cruces

Las Cruces, United States • 30 Oct 2026

Event Overview

The Backyard Ultra - Las Cruces, also known as the Day of the Dead edition of the Land of Enchantment Backyard Ultra, takes place at the Prehistoric Trackways National Monument in New Mexico. The event follows a "last runner standing" format within a scenic venue featuring views of the Organ Mountain range. The course consists of well-maintained trails primarily composed of crushed gravel with some elevation changes.

Course and Format

Participants run a 4.167-mile (6.706 km) lollipop-style loop. A new "yard" starts every hour, and runners must be inside the starting box when the bell sounds to remain in the competition. The event continues until only one runner successfully completes a yard alone within the one-hour time limit. Standard rules apply:

  • A warning sound is given 3, 2, and 1 minutes before each start.
  • Personal assistance and trekking poles are forbidden on the course.
  • Runners may only leave the course to use the restroom.
  • Participants who complete 24 yards (100 miles) receive a buckle.

Facilities and Support

The start/finish area provides space for personal aid setups, crew spots, and camping. This is a cupless event, though the central aid station provides hydration including water and electrolyte drinks. Food options typically include trail snacks, pickles, wraps, and coffee. Participants receive a hoodie and a DNF medal upon finishing their race. Awards are presented for the overall male and female winners as well as the fastest yard lap.

Participant Information

Registration is capped at 75 participants. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance to support local trail maintenance and protection. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
