Backyard Ultra - Las Cruces
Las Cruces, United States • 30 Oct 2026
Day of the Dead Land of Enchantment Backyard Ultra : Prehistoric Trackways National Monument
The event is a backyard ultra using a repeated 4.167 mile loop inside Prehistoric Trackways National Monument near Las Cruces, New Mexico. The course follows well maintained trails composed primarily of crushed gravel and includes some elevation change and scenic views of the Organ Mountain range. The format is a last runner standing event in which a single 4.167 mile yard starts each hour and laps are repeated until one competitor completes a yard alone within the hour. Standard backyard rules apply: runners must be in the clearly marked starting box at the top of each hour, a warning sound will occur shortly before the bell, personal assistance is allowed only between laps, aids like trekking poles are forbidden on course, and slower runners must allow faster runners to pass.
The event provides a large area for personal aid setup around the start and finish area, with camping and parking nearby. The start/finish aid station will provide porta potties, hydration including water and electrolyte drink, salty and sweet snacks, pickles, wraps, and coffee in late night and morning hours. This is a cupless event.
All participants receive a hoodie and a Day of the Dead DNF medal; runners who complete 24 yards receive a 100 mile buckle. Awards will be given for overall male and female placings and for the fastest yard lap. Registration is capped at 75 participants and a portion of each registration will be donated to the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance.
