About the race
The Waiorau Snowgaine is a winter rogaine held at the Snow Farm on the Pisa Range. Teams navigate to as many checkpoints as possible within a chosen time limit, with options for 2-hour and 5-hour courses. Competitors may use ski touring gear, snowshoes, or cross-country skis. The event area includes groomed ski trails and backcountry terrain; the event map is at 1:15000 scale with 10 m contour intervals.
Teams plan their route after collecting maps; controls carry different point values indicated by the tens digit of each control number (for example 86 is worth 80 points). Competitors must carry per-person compulsory clothing items including thermal layers, waterproof jacket and overtrousers, warm hat and gloves, and an insulated jacket. Per team compulsory items include a cell phone, a first aid kit, and a compass. Competitors should bring sufficient food and drink for their chosen duration.
The Snow Farm is accessed from Cardrona Valley Road between Wanaka and Queenstown; the access road is unsealed but suitable for most vehicles. Vehicles must carry chains in case conditions require them and follow on-road signage for chain fitting. Entries close on Friday 18 September. Trail passes and any gear hire are additional to event entry fees; a promo code for a reduced trail pass is provided by the organiser. A prize giving and spot prizes are scheduled after the event.
