About the race
Outlet Backyard Ultra Wānaka is an inaugural backyard ultra held at Outlet Camp Wānaka, located at the head of the glacial-fed Mata-Au / Clutha River. The event bases a corral and entrant camping area within the camp grounds and offers dedicated backyard family camping along the race route. Primary crew and entrants have no camping fee and discounted rates are available for whanau and friends on the Friday before the event.
The course for each yard is a loop of 6.7 km that runs over well drained moraine, packed forest floor, single and wide Central Otago trail sections. The route mixes open and forested stretches with wild views and a consistent variety of terrain. Current course information lists about 35 m of elevation with uphill gradients generally no more than 1% and downhill gradients up to 3% in places.
Each entrant is allocated a 3 by 3 m space for a personal race setup. The organizers will provide a number of toilets on course and information about required gear; a vendor named Kits & Bits is scheduled to support competitors with race equipment.
The event follows standard Backyard Ultra rules: each yard must be completed within the hour to count, competitors must start at the bell, restroom breaks are the only permitted off-course time during a yard, no personal aid is allowed during a yard, and the winner is the last person to complete a yard.
