Merino Muster
The Merino Muster is New Zealand's longest-running cross-country ski marathon, first held in 1995. The race takes place at Snow Farm, a dedicated cross-country ski field in the Pisa Range, around 1,500 metres above the Cardrona Valley. The event reflects the area's farming history; many trails follow old farm and sheep-mustering routes that inspired the race name.
The event is associated with international ski series and organisations including Worldloppet and Ski Classics. It is scheduled one week after the Kangaroo Hoppet, typically in the fifth week of August or the first week of September. The Merino Muster offers multiple race distances and family options, and it attracts both local and international participants.
Accommodation and transport options are provided through local packages and a Wanaka hotel package. Race facilities at Snow Farm include ski hire and trails developed to work with the natural topography and snow-retention features of the terrain.
