About the race
The Jurassic Coast Ultra is a 40 miles event that follows the South West Coast Path from Abbotsbury to Lulworth Cove. The route runs along marked coastal trails and is described as wild and rugged with steep climbs and descents. Navigation is largely self-led; the path is well worn and waymarked by Acorn signs, and in many places the route can be followed by keeping the sea on the right and the land on the left.
Event headquarters is at the Masonic Lodge Portland, Victoria Square, Portland, Dorset, DT5 1AL. Transport is provided from the HQ to the start and from the finish back to the HQ. Checkpoints are positioned approximately every 10–20 km and provide food, water, coke and other items. The event supplies on-course support, medical cover, and a minibus pick-up for participants who retire.
Entry includes a GPS tracker with live-view tracking maps, an event T-shirt, food and drink on course, transport to and from the HQ, a bespoke finisher’s medal, free parking at the HQ, and medical cover. A minimum speed of 5 km per hour is required and the total allowed time is 13 hours to cover roughly 65 km; runners who miss cutoffs will be retired.
Participants must carry mandatory kit including a navigation device or map and compass, waterproofs, warm clothing sealed in waterproof bags, hat and gloves, emergency food, torch and spare batteries, at least 400 ml water, a high visibility item, a folding cup, and a fully charged mobile phone. The route is covered by the event medical team and supplied contact details should be used in an emergency. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
