Trails & Tarmac Summer 12 hour Back Yard Ultra
This event is a Backyard Ultra held near Crickhowell in the Black Mountains on a looped course. The loop measures 4.2 miles and the route is roughly half trail and half tarmac, with one gradual climb, a short steep section and otherwise relatively flat terrain.
The format uses hourly "yards". The first 11 yards follow the standard Backyard Ultra rules, each loop to be completed within an hour. The 12th yard is a timed race on the same loop run in the reverse direction to determine the winners. Timing is in place and runners receive 3, 2 and 1 minute warnings before each start; all runners must start at the bell and there are no late starts.
Awards are given to the first placed male and female on the final lap, with a trophy for each. Medals are awarded to anyone who reaches 32 miles. New unique medals were introduced for 2026.
Support and logistics include common aid stations with one at HQ, food and drink provided with additional hot food after the fifth yard, medics on site, showers and toilets, and event photographers. There is a basic camping field with nearby toilets and a nearby commercial camping option which requires booking. The entry fee is £85.
Rules relevant to competitors and crew include restrictions on leaving the course during a yard, no non-competitors on course, no personal aid during a yard, prohibition of artificial aids and limits on supporter access to the corral and kitchen areas.
