The Ring
The Ring is a clockwise circuit of the full 71-mile orange-blazed Massanutten Trail that runs around Fort Valley, VA, in the George Washington National Forest, roughly between Front Royal and Luray. The route follows ridgelines of the eastern and western Massanutten ranges. The trail is rocky and slow; the course accumulates about 13,500 feet of ascent and descent.
Entry is limited to 60 runners and is subject to qualification and review. Qualifying runners must demonstrate recent long-trail experience, typically either completion of a trail 50 miler plus recent Massanutten experience or completion of any 100-mile race. Entry is managed on a first-come, first-served basis with a waitlist. The event follows a low‑entry, club-supported model with no entry fees, no significant awards, and minimal formal race services.
Aid is provided at multiple locations on the course, including Milford Gap (13.3 miles, primarily water), Camp Roosevelt (24.9 miles, first full aid and roving drop bag), Crisman Hollow Road (34.4), Moreland Gap (40.7), Edinburg Gap (48.7), Woodstock Tower (56.9), and Powell’s Fort Camp (62.4). Roving drop bags are available at Camp Roosevelt, Crisman Hollow, Moreland Gap, and Edinburg Gap; a separate Woodstock Tower drop bag is available at mile 56.9. GPX and aid station charts are published for the course.
There are three enforced cutoffs at Moreland Gap (9:30 pm), Edinburg Gap (1:30 am), and Woodstock Tower (6:00 am) intended to protect volunteers and manage overall pacing. No medical staff are provided on course; runners are responsible for their own safety and emergency care. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
