Montane Lakeland 50 & 100 : About the race

The event comprises two long-distance trail races in the Lake District: a 100 mile route and a 50 mile route, both run mainly on public bridleways and footpaths. The 100 mile course is circular and includes about 6300 m of ascent. The 50 mile event covers the second half of the 100 course and includes about 3000 m of ascent.

The 100 mile route starts in Coniston and follows a clockwise loop taking in Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale and Buttermere before reaching Keswick. From there it continues to Matterdale, Haweswater and returns via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater to Coniston. The route does not pass over popular Lakeland summits but moves through valleys and contour fells.

The 50 mile route starts at the northern end of Ullswater within the Dalemain Estate, follows the eastern shoreline to Howtown, then visits Haweswater and Mardale Head. It continues through Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tilberthwaite before the final climb and descent to Coniston. Competitors are based at Coniston and coaches transfer participants to the 50 mile start, with personal kit left at the finish.

Both events have compulsory staffed checkpoints with food and drink. The 100 mile event has 14 compulsory checkpoints and a 40 hour time limit. The 50 mile event has 6 compulsory checkpoints and a 24 hour time limit. Strong navigation skills, experience of fell walking or running, and extensive preparation are required; many competitors do not finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
