The Hallam Chase
The Hallam Chase is described as the oldest continuously run fell race in the world. It is a handicapped fell race of approximately 3.5 miles (5.7 km) with about 860 feet (260 metres) of elevation gain. The event takes place each Whitsun Tuesday and has been held since 1862. Entry is open only to runners aged over 18.
The recorded route begins around 826 feet above sea level and drops to a low point near the River Rivelin at about 400 feet, a descent of roughly 426 feet from the start. The course crosses the top of Den Bank at roughly 700 feet, includes a 50 foot descent to the fields, then a footbridge over the River Rivelin at the quarter mark. Runners then climb via Tofts Lane and Church Street, crossing a 750 foot contour to reach Stannington Church at about 775 feet. The race crosses Rivelin Valley Road and includes two road crossings in total.
Course measurements have varied historically; past accounts list distances from 3 miles to 3.25 miles, and parts of the route were not formally surveyed for many years. For safety, a short dog leg along Rivelin Valley Road was introduced in recent course layouts, and the route has changed over time.
