The Drop - Durham (08/08/2027)
The Drop - Durham is a navigation challenge starting and finishing at The Cartologist, North Road, Durham, DH1 4NQ. Participants hand over electronic devices and navigational aids at registration and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag.
On event day participants board a bus, wear blackout blindfolds or an approved alternative, and are driven to an undisclosed drop-off location. From that point they must travel back to the event centre using only their own navigation and physical effort. Distances are measured as the crow flies and the actual route may be longer.
Rules include sealing any recording device in the provided emergency bag, using only organiser-provided maps if any are supplied, and completing the course on foot; breaking the emergency bag seal results in disqualification. Blindfolds can be substituted with blackout safety goggles where required.
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional paid feature for safety and sharing. Trackers are accurate within about 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings or signal black spots; placement in an outside pocket with a clear view of the sky is recommended. All trackers must be returned to staff at the end of the event or a replacement fee of £175 will apply. Organisers retain additional safety features not available to participants.
Local access notes: town centre parking is available; the nearest railway station is a 10 minute walk and the bus station is about 5 minutes from the event hub. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
