The District Back Yard Ultra : Into the Woods, Cumbria
The District Back Yard Ultra is a Backyard Ultra held in 2027 at Into the Woods, Maughanby Farm, Little Salkeld, Penrith, Cumbria. The course runs through woodland, trails and open countryside with views towards Blencathra and the Lake District fells to the west and the Pennine Hills to the east.
The event uses a repeating loop format: one loop is completed every hour and the last runner to complete a solo loop wins. Each loop is 4.167 miles / 6.706 km long and includes about 325 ft of elevation. Runners must finish each loop within the hour and return to the starting corral before the next loop begins. An aid station will provide water and basic supplies, but the event is self supported so runners should carry their own race nutrition and equipment.
The event includes weekend camping for athletes and crew sharing the athlete’s tent. Competitors receive a 3 m × 3 m race pitch for their setup. Campervan and spectator tent options are available. Live music and food vendors feature on Friday evening and a new camping layout is planned for 2027. A wellness area with saunas and ice baths is offered for an optional fee, and treehouses are available to hire for upgraded accommodation.
Entry offers reward proven Backyard Ultra performances, and the inaugural edition set a course record of 33 yards (137.5 miles). The first edition sold out and places are limited. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
