Silent Night

Silent Night is a night time fell race organised by Durham Fell Runners and licensed and supported by the Fell Runners Association. The route is 6.6 km long with 370 m of ascent and runs entirely in the dark on rough, pathless ground to the 703 m summit of Chapelfell Top above St John’s Chapel, Weardale. The course is unmarked and navigation is required; competitors may not use poles and GPS devices must not be used for navigation, although a GPS may be used to display distance, time, speed or altitude. A map is supplied at registration.

Entries are handled through SI Entries and competitors must provide verifiable evidence of completing at least two events that include off path navigation, for example Mountain Marathons, orienteering events, or AL Lakeland type races. Trail races, sky races and short fell races are not accepted as qualifying evidence. Kit requirements are extensive and will be strictly enforced.

Parking and registration take place at Chatterbox Cafe, 11 Market Place, St John’s Chapel, Weardale DL13 1QF. Required kit includes a map, a suitable compass, a whistle, a headtorch and a spare headtorch, waterproof top with hood and taped seams, waterproof bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves, hat, an emergency bivvy bag, spare warm insulated top and full length tights in a waterproof bag, and a mobile phone with the race officer number stored. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
