Silent Night Fell Race
Silent Night is a night-time fell race in Weardale that follows an unmarked out-and-back route to Chapelfell Top (703 m). The course covers 6.6 km with 370 m of ascent and is run entirely in the dark over rough, pathless ground. Navigation skills are required because the route is not waymarked.
GPS devices must not be used for navigation, although they may be used to display distance, time, speed or altitude. Competitors must provide verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off-path navigation, for example mountain marathons, orienteering events, or AL Lakeland style races; trail races, sky races and short fell races are not accepted as qualifying experience. Kit requirements are extensive and will be strictly enforced. Required items include a map (provided at registration), a compass suitable for navigation, whistle, head torch with a spare, waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves and hat, an emergency bivvy bag, and spare warm clothing in a waterproof bag. A mobile phone is required but specific contact details are not repeated here.
