The Dartmoor Beast
The Dartmoor Beast is a trail running event through Dartmoor National Park scheduled for Sunday 27 September 2026. The event offers two measured route options that cross moorland, woodland, rivers and bog, and include steep ascents and granite tors. The event is now full and no new participants will be accepted on the day.
Available distances:
- 20 miles
- 14 miles (Wee Beastie)
The longer route covers up to five of Dartmoor’s granite tors and rises about 3399 ft in total, including a 377 ft climb at a 22% gradient to the summit of High Willhays, the highest point in southern England. The 14-mile route gains about 2224 ft across four tors.
Both routes start and finish at Pavilion in the Park, Okehampton. Okehampton train station and several nearby car parks are close to the start area. Water stations and a refreshments stand are provided on course; competitors should note that cups are not supplied. Toilets are available at the start/finish and along the route. The course is fully supported with professional medical staff and first aid stations. Races are chip timed; results will be posted on the event website and finishing times sent to runners by text. Finishers receive a metal medal, and trophies are awarded to the fastest male and female finishers on each route. Proceeds support Hospiscare, the local hospice for Exeter, central and east Devon.
