Big Mountain Run
The Big Mountain Run is an annual trail event that sends participants up the Danny On trail to the summit of Big Mountain from the base at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, MT (3913 Big Mountain Road). The route is approximately 3.8 miles with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain; runners and hikers reach the summit where awards and snacks are provided. Registrants receive a lift pass for the descent; dogs are allowed to race on a leash but are not permitted on the lift.
The event includes competitive and age-based awards: prizes for the top three men and top three women, ribbons for juniors, titles for the fastest adults (King and Queen) and fastest juniors (Prince and Princess), plus recognitions for the oldest and youngest runner. There is a Top Dog award for the fastest leashed dog and specific prizes noted for fastest dam and sire. The Birthday Club awards a cupcake to men who finish in a time less than their age, and to women who finish in a time equal to their age plus ten minutes.
Registration fees vary by age: early registration for ages 17 and older, day-of pricing, and a junior rate for ages 16 and under are listed by the organizer. Online registration closes the day before the race; day-of registration is available for an additional fee. Proceeds support the Glacier Nordic Ski Team and its scholarship fund.
