About the race
Terra de Gigantes is an endurance ultramarathon in Portugal that crosses the country from the highest point of continental Portugal to the Atlantic coast at Nazaré. The linear route starts at Torre in Serra da Estrela and finishes in Nazaré, with a total distance of 303.8 km and about 10,815 m of positive ascent. The event is contested non stop with a 74 hour time limit and navigation by GPS; the course is not waymarked and participants must follow the supplied GPS track. The race uses eight support bases, including the finish, where runners can eat, drink and rest.
Competitors are expected to be semi self-sufficient between bases. External premeditated support on the course is prohibited and may lead to disqualification; one assistant is allowed inside bases. Medical rescue and a medical team are provided by the organization and insurance for the event is included in the entry fee, although participants remain responsible for some costs and are advised to hold personal sport insurance. Participation is open to those aged 20 or over, with proven experience in long races and GPS navigation required.
GPS with sufficient recording capacity and replaceable power is mandatory. The organizer may check equipment and apply penalties or disqualifications for rule breaches. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
