About the race
The Terra de Gigantes Ultramarathon is a non-stop endurance race across Portugal from the Serra da Estrela high point to the Atlantic coast at Nazaré. The official race distance is 306.8 km with 8,214 m of positive elevation gain and a maximum time limit of 74 hours. The course is linear, unmarked and navigated by GPS; the organizer provides the GPS track and may require delivery of the device after the race.
Participation is individual. The event runs in winter and participants must be prepared for very cold conditions, possible rain, wind or snow and long isolated sections. The race is semi-self-sufficient between mandatory support bases; there are eight bases of support including the finish, where food, drink and some facilities are provided. GPS navigation, mandatory safety and navigation equipment and a sleep system for emergencies are required. The minimum age for participants is 20 years and prior completion of long races (100 km or more) is strongly recommended; organizers may request proof of previous results and can refuse entries they consider unsuitable.
Entries are limited, with public and reserved places and specific refund and cancellation rules. The race enforces strict rules on external assistance, mandatory gear checks, time barriers at bases and penalties that range from time additions to disqualification.
