Sourton Tors Fell Race

The event is a traditional fell race on Dartmoor that covers just under 5 km and climbs 276 m to Sourton Tors. The route is entirely off-road, mainly across open moorland, and includes compulsory checkpoints near the Ice Works, the trig point at Sourton Tors, the descent to Lake Moorgate and the pit south west of the tors. Course marking is limited and runners are expected to self-navigate.

Race headquarters is at Sourton Village Hall on the A386 near Okehampton. The start is from the moorgate and the finish is next to the village hall. Parking is provided in a farmers field behind the Highwayman Inn with marshals directing vehicles; parking next to the village hall is not permitted. Tea, coffee and cakes are available for sale after the race for cash only, and the Highwayman Inn offers food and drink nearby.

The race is licensed by the Fell Runners Association, held under FRA rules and classified AS. There are prizes for first male and female and for age categories. No mementoes are provided, reflected in the low entry fee structure: £7.00 for FRA members and £7.50 for non-FRA entrants with higher on-the-day fees. Juniors may take part; minimum age is 8 and parental permission is required on the entry form.

Suggested kit in poor weather includes a whistle, raincoat and hat. Runners unfamiliar with the course should carry and know how to use a map and compass.
