2026 SMOC Nite Owl O

This is an orienteering event held at Island Lake Recreation Area, with the meeting area at the Mountain Bike Parking Lot. The format is a 2-hour Score-O, with checkpoints visited in any order and points scored within a two hour window. Maps are provided for participants.

Entry is charged per start or group. Standard entry is $15, with a reduced $10 rate available for members using the coupon code SMOCMEMBER. Junior entries are $5 for individuals listed on the club member roster. An extra map costs $5. Organizers request registration by the Thursday before the event to allow time for map printing; a late fee of $10 applies after 11 pm on that Thursday. Volunteer roles are offered as an alternative way to avoid the entry fee.

The venue is part of the Rec Passport DNR program; participants should be aware of the vehicle registration requirement for this site and that self-serve kiosks are available at the area. The zone near the start and finish is designated no hunting, but longer courses may pass through areas where wearing orange is recommended for visibility.

Orienteering uses a detailed topographic map and a compass to locate checkpoints in order. Loaner compasses are available. Recommended clothing and equipment include long pants and long sleeves (orange recommended for visibility), layered clothing, sturdy shoes suitable for mud or marshes, water and snacks, insect precautions, and ivy precautions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
