Ode in the Snow : 8 Hours of Ode
The event in Holly, Michigan features multiple trail distances on a 4.167 mile loop with about 450 feet of climbing. The loop is approximately two thirds technical single track, one third moderate walking or hiking path, with a few hundred yards of pavement. Distances offered include:
- Trail 10k
- Trail 5k
- Trail 4.17 mile
- 8 Hour on-site
- Virtual 8 Hour
Runners may choose a "Backyard" format that uses hourly loop starts or run continuously for as long as they wish, up to the 8 hour limit for on-site participants. Continuous status cannot be reverted back to Backyard after a specified point once the race is underway. There is no chip timing for on-site races.
Contestants provide their own aid; pacers are restricted unless a continuous runner exceeds ten laps. Crew support is allowed. Racers receive a chair/cooler space near the start/finish and may use one 10’ x 10’ canopy. Gas or fuel camp stoves are permitted with a fire extinguisher; charcoal or wood fires are limited to designated campground facilities. Camping is not allowed in the start/finish area but is available in the McGinnis campgrounds at the north half of the park.
Other rules and services include alcohol allowed, glass containers prohibited, water and coffee provided, no hiking poles dogs or strollers on the trail, no headphones on trails, and a carry light or headlamp required for trail use after dusk.
On-site prizes include race entry vouchers, medals for shorter distances, and collectible mugs for ultra participants. Virtual entrants compete for distance prizes based on outdoor GPS submissions and must complete their runs within two weeks prior to the in-person event and submit results by the day after the on-site race.
