About the race
The Ode in the Snow takes place in Holly, Michigan, on a trail course located at 5000 McGinnis Rd. This winter event features multiple distance options and formats, allowing participants to choose between a standard race or an 8-hour timed challenge. The course consists of a 4.167 mile trail loop featuring approximately 450 feet of climbing. The terrain is comprised of two-thirds technical single track, one-third walking path, and a short paved section.
Participants can choose from the following distances and formats:
- 8 Hour Ultra
- Trail 10k
- Trail 5k
- Trail 4.17 miler
- Virtual 8 Hour
The event offers two distinct styles of participation. In the "Backyard Style," runners start a new loop every 60 minutes. Alternatively, the "Continuous" format allows participants to run as far as possible without hourly breaks. Runners may transition from the Backyard format to Continuous during the event, though they cannot switch back. The 5k and 10k races utilize a modified version of the main loop that excludes an out-and-back section.
Participants are responsible for providing their own aid, though water and coffee are available on-site. The rules prohibit the use of hiking poles, dogs, strollers, and headphones on the trails. Traction aids for shoes are recommended due to potential winter conditions. Each runner is allocated a 10’ x 10’ space for a chair, cooler, or canopy near the start line. There is no chip timing for this event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
