Rasus y Bannau

Rasus y Bannau are three long mountain trail running races that start and finish in Brecon and follow circular routes through the Bannau Brycheiniog Brecon Beacons National Park. The event offers marked routes, GPS files and an interactive map for the provisional courses.

Distances available:

  • 100 km Ultra 64 miles / 104 km / +5,100 m ascent
  • 40 mile Ultra 40 miles / 65 km / +2,850 m ascent
  • Marathon 26.5 miles / 65 km / +2,000 m ascent

All routes climb from Brecon onto the north ridge of Cribyn and pass notable features such as Fan y Big, Carn Pica, Torpantau, the Taf Fechan Forest and Pen y Fan. The marathon route climbs Corn Du and Pen y Fan before returning to Brecon. The two ultra routes swing west over Fan Fawr and Fan Llia; the 100 km route continues into the Black Mountain and tops Fan Brycheiniog before rejoining the 40 mile line above Craig Cerrig Gleisiad.

Navigation is by running arrows at major junctions plus a required GPS trace; competitors must follow the published route using markers and GPS. Checkpoints are provided on each course: seven for the 100 km, five for the 40 mile race and four for the marathon. Checkpoints provide drinks, snacks and more substantial food. A drop bag is available for 100 km runners at CP5 Glyntawe. There is a compulsory kit list and published experience requirements for mountain running and navigation. Entry fees include checkpoints, electronic timing, GPS tracking, safety cover and finishers medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
