Petzl Night Runner Rivington

The event is a night trail meeting at Rivington with a "close encounters" theme, inspired by local UFO reputations and the radio masts on Winter Hill. The main format uses reflective course signage and requires runners to wear a head torch to see the route at night.

Distances:

  • 10k marked night trail with reflective signs and head torch required
  • Half Marathon retained distance introduced in 2025
  • 1k kids free event with medals for all finishers

The terrain at Rivington is rough, boggy and rocky, and road shoes are not adequate. Runners are advised to use trail or fell shoes with an aggressive tread. Because the event takes place in winter conditions, warm clothing and a wind or waterproof jacket are recommended. The minimum age for both main distances is 16 years on the day.

Entry details include discounted and general fees for each distance, and entries close either at 12 noon on the Friday prior to the event or when the event fills. Included with entry are a custom glow in the dark finisher's medal, free car parking and electronic timing. Event photographs are available to download after the race. The venue is Rivington and Blackrod High School, Rivington Lane, Bolton BL6 7RU. Dogs are not permitted to run but may be present as supporters in the start and finish area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
