About the race
NAV4 Pennine 39 is a supported mountain trail event on a classic section of the Pennine Way, running from Teesdale to Alston over a 37 mile route. The course follows riverside paths and high moorland across the Cumbrian and Durham Pennines. The route passes Bowlees and Low Force and High Force waterfalls, then Cauldron's Snout (CP1) where only fresh water is available. It traverses Cow Green reservoir and the geological feature High Cup Nick, then descends to Dufton Village Hall (CP2), an indoor checkpoint offering hot and cold drinks and nibbles.
After climbs including Old Man Knock and Great Dun Fell the route reaches Crossfell, noted as the highest point in England outside of the Lake District, then the iconic Greg's Hut (CP3) and a descent to Garrigill Village Hall (CP4) before riverside paths to the finish at Alston YHA. Logistics include an entry fee of £80 that covers coach transport to the start from Alston YHA and GPS tracking via Open Tracking. The event limits places to one minibus and one coach, effectively 60 places. Registration is available at the hostel and at Bowlees if prearranged.
Alston YHA offers small bunk accommodation with a Friday night option at £40 including breakfast, and a Saturday night option at £60 including supper and a recovery drink or drinks. A shuttle bus from Penrith via Langwathby is available for £15. GPX files will be issued and GPS watches are permitted.
Finish times typically range from six to fourteen hours and there are no formal checkpoint cut-offs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
