About the race
Pendle Fell Races is a short fell race on Pendle Hill using a course based at Barley Village Hall, Barley near Burnley, Lancashire (BB12 9JU). The current Barley course was introduced in 1974; earlier races began in 1956 on a 6.5 mile course from the Bay Horse at Roughlee. Small changes have been made over the years on the lower fields to avoid livestock.
The senior course is 4.5 miles / 7.3 km with about 1,500 ft / 457 m of climb. The event is held under UKA rules and is registered with the Fell Runners Association; senior runners must carry the FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit and a recommendation will be given on the day. Entry on the day only; fees are listed separately for FRA members and non-members. Prizes are provided by Pete Bland Sports and there are no team prizes. Minimum entry age for seniors is 16. No race was held in 2020 and 2021.
Junior races take place before the senior event on private farmland. Age categories include under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 with designated turn back points; under 20s run in the senior race. All junior courses are out and back from the field just up the lane from the village hall. Terrain for senior and junior races includes track, field and fell, with the route running up to Buttock Farm and then climbing towards the trig. During lambing there are strict rules on dogs at the start, finish and on the route. Kit requirements apply for U12, U14, U16 and U18 (jacket, hat and gloves) and marshals will check that required kit is carried. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
