The Ultra - Brecon Beacons

The Ultra is a 30 mile trail ultra through the Brecon Beacons. The route covers mountain terrain with steep climbs, technical descents, exposed ridgelines and variable mountain weather. Elevation gain for the route is 3750 ft / 1143 m.

The event starts from Georgetown Boys & Girls Club, Dynevor Street, Georgetown, Merthyr Tydfil CF48 1AY. Entry fees are listed separately for affiliated and non affiliated runners at £60 and £62 respectively.

There are five checkpoints on the course: Cwm Cadlen Road crossing at 6 miles; Pont yr Daf car park at 13 miles; a check-in/check-out only point at the Pen Y Fan summit; Torpantau Train Station at 19.5 miles; and Ffynnondwyn (Taff Trail) at 26 miles. Four of the checkpoints will have water and food available. The event operates as a cup-less race, so competitors should bring a drinking cup if they wish to use checkpoint drinks.

Compulsory kit for the event includes a mobile phone (fully charged at the start), a minimum of 1 litre hydration, a foil blanket or bivi bag, 400 kcal emergency rations, a basic first aid kit, a head torch or torch, a whistle, waterproof jacket and trousers (taped seams), a warm layer with hat and gloves, and a bag or rucksack.

The cut-off at checkpoint 3 is six hours after the race start, which requires an average pace of about 20 minutes per mile or quicker. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
