Lakes Mountain 40 : event overview

Lakes Mountain 40 is a fell running event covering approximately 40 miles with around 10,000 ft of total ascent and descent. The route is an unmarked mountain trail that includes the summits of Helvellyn and High Street and uses a variety of Lake District terrain, predominantly Lakeland mountain paths. Competitors need basic mountain navigation skills; GPS devices are permitted.

The course follows a logical sequence between checkpoints but allows free route choice on open access land and on public rights of way where legal. There are three main roadside checkpoints offering food and drink, and a return feed described as “Soup Plus.” One named drinks stop provides hot and cold drinks and small savory and sweet nibbles; gels and sports drinks are not supplied there.

The event base is Askham Community Centre, which serves as the event centre, registration location and finish. Parking is available onsite or adjacent with campervan spaces. Penrith rail station is approximately five miles away. Floor space at the community centre can be booked for the night before the event.

Organisers advise full winter mountain running kit owing to exposed, high ground. Recommended items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, winter thermal layers, spare insulating jacket, warm hat and gloves, head torch, map and compass, whistle, survival bag, food and drink, and a mug or bottle. Entry numbers are limited to a maximum of 150. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
