Nav Challenge 4 - Mourne Mountains
Nav Challenge 4 is an unmarked navigational challenge in the Mourne Mountains, County Dublin, scheduled for Sunday 18 October 2026. The event uses map and compass navigation only; electronic devices are not permitted for navigation. The route is not marked and the event is part of the Navigational Challenge league.
Key course details include a main course of 16.00 km and a short course of 10.00 km. The main course involves about 500 m of climb and the event is graded with a difficulty rating of 9, noting difficult terrain, more than 500 m ascent, and distances over 10 km.
At the start competitors receive grid references and descriptions for each control plus a punch card. Entrants mark controls on their map and may visit control points in any order. A master map with controls marked is released eight minutes after the start for reference. Both courses involve open mountain and map corrections will be posted at registration. The route planning uses the Harvey Mourne Mountains map series.
Mandatory kit is Level C Advanced and must be carried in all weather. Required items include a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number stored, foil blanket or bivvy, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL water, emergency food, map of the route area, and a compass. Organisers will finalise the exact kit on the day and may perform random kit checks; lack of required items can lead to denied entry or disqualification.
