Moran Constitutional Relay
The Moran Constitutional Relay is a 70-mile, 12-leg team relay held on the trails of Moran State Park on Orcas Island. The event runs over two days with the first eight legs on Saturday and the final four legs on Sunday. Teams may consist of two to six runners.
The course passes a variety of terrains: towering lowland forests, moss-covered rocky balds, contoured lakeshores, streams, wetlands, and the summit of 2399-foot Mount Constitution with wide vistas. The route also runs near park buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps about eight decades ago.
Legs were designed for variety, with differing lengths and profiles. Distances range from three to nine miles; some legs have substantial climb, others are mostly downhill, and some are flatter or mixed. Team members may divide the legs as they prefer, provided each member completes at least two legs. Consecutive legs by the same runner are allowed.
Logistics and included items noted by the organizers: registration is limited to the first 50 teams, with an initial release of 25 team slots and the remainder released later; registration is by team and fees vary by team size and timing. Entry includes an event t-shirt, meals across the weekend, and finisher medals for teams that complete the entire course. Onsite lodging options and camping are available. Each team is asked to provide a volunteer or pay an alternate volunteer fee. Parking near the event center is limited and cellular coverage in the park is spotty.
