Moraine Hills Run for the Hills
Moraine Hills Run for the Hills takes place at Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry, Illinois on September 26, 2026. The event offers both in person and virtual participation; the virtual window runs September 1 through September 27, 2026.
Distances
- 5K Run/Walk: entirely on the Leatherleaf Bog Trail, asphalt and crushed limestone
- 10K Run/Walk: on Lake Defiance and Leatherleaf Bog Trails with lake and marsh views
- Half Marathon Run/Walk: follows the 10K route for the first six miles, then loops McHenry Dam trail and includes an out and back on the River Road bike trail before returning to Northern Woods
All courses lie completely within Moraine Hills State Park and are closed to motorized vehicles. Trails are primarily crushed limestone with intermittent asphalt; course marshals and directional arrows will mark key intersections. Water and Gatorade are provided at stations about every two miles; snacks are not provided on course, with bananas and water available at the finish. Restroom access varies by distance: none on the 5K, two on the 10K, and three on the half marathon.
Packet pick up is available at The Running Depot in Crystal Lake on September 24 and 25, with additional packet pick up on race day in the park. Participation medals can be added for an extra fee through August 28. The event is organized by Friends of Moraine Hills State Park and benefits scholarships, educational programs, and park improvements. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
