Dusk-to-Dawn Trail Challenge
The Long Night in Lanford is a multi-lap trail event held in the South Carolina countryside in Enoree. The format of the race is based on the solar cycle, where participants begin their run at dusk and conclude the event at dawn. To be officially recognized as a finisher, participants must complete at least one lap at the start of the event and one final lap when the sun rises. The individual who completes the highest number of laps between sunset and sunrise is declared the winner.
The event takes place on a 1-mile off-road loop that begins and ends at a barn. The course features a variety of terrain including gravel paths, downhill wooded sections, and open fields along Beaverdam Creek. Runners will also navigate through pine trees and hay pastures. Due to the nature of the farm environment and the presence of resident dogs, strollers and personal pets are not permitted on the course.
Event Logistics and Atmosphere
As the event occurs overnight, participants are required to provide their own light sources, such as headlamps or flashlights. The race features specific auditory signals, including horn blasts to mark the start, a direction change at midnight, and the commencement of the final lap at dawn. An aid station remains open throughout the night, providing water, snacks, and hot food.
The venue opens mid-day on Saturday for packet pickup and setup. There is designated space available for participants to set up tents and for support crews to remain on-site. Following the conclusion of the race at sunrise, a hot breakfast is served to participants, and professional race photos are captured during the event.
